All water sports, the snorkeling is particularly good. Sailing, fine dining.
Tortola, where the past of the West Indies meets the present of the BVI. The largest island in the chain, Tortola offers a variety of exciting vacation possibilities.
The protected anchorages at Brandywine Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Hodges Creek Marina Cay, Sopers Hole, and Trellis Bay are ideal for boaters.
Secluded palm-shaded beaches at Apple Bay, Brewers Bay, Elizabeth Beach, Josiahs Bay Beach, Long Bay Beach, and Smugglers Cove make for excellent swimming and snorkelling. There are also many well-equipped facilities for fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving, or horseback riding.
Wander through centuries-old ruins such as the Dungeon, Fort George, Fort Recovery, the Mount Healthy Windmill, and Callwood's Rum Distillery, which is still in operation, and explore Tortolas history at the BVI Folk Museum in Road Town.
At Mount Healthy National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park, there are rock outcroppings and vertical ghuts, or dry steam valleys, exposing the deep, rich earth of this volcanic island.
In Road Town, the J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens offer peaceful walks through pergolas and pathways covered with colourful vines, as well as a miniature rain forest and a fern house. |

Frenchmans Lookout is the Carribbean home of one of America's foremost luxury hotel developers. His Martha's Vineyard home was the summer vacation residence of former President Bill Clinton for seven years. No detail has been overlooked in creating a perfect Caribbean vacation retreat at his Caribbean home, Frenchmans Lookout. Frenchmans Lookout is the most beautiful place I have ever stayed in the Caribbean. The decor, the views and the staff were simply amazing. Kate Moss, Supermodel, July 2006.
Frenchman's Cay has its own launch, a 36' Contender high-speed luxury boat. This boat may be available for pick-up in St. Thomas by separate arrangements with the on-site property manager.
Tortola is the largest island in the BVI chain. The swimming, snorkeling and boating are all outstanding, although there is plenty on offer for those who prefer to see the sights, such as the Botanical Gardens, the Museums, the Rum Distillery and the National Parks.
There are regular ferries, private and crewed yachts and small planes travelling to other islands daily.
The Tortola shops in Road Town carry a colourful selection of Caribbean gifts, beachwear and sandals. There are hundreds of restaurants and bars in the area, most of which enjoy spectacular sea views. |
